Peer-to-Peer Training Circles

What is this?

Peer-to-peer circles are small, local groups where neighbors and community embers come together to connect, learn, and talk about what’s happening in their communities.

These groups meet in everyday spaces — coffee shops, living rooms, libraries — and are led by community members, not outsiders. The goal is simple: build relationships, share knowledge, and create space for real conversations about local issues.

How it Works

Each circle is guided by a facilitator, but everyone participates. Conversations are structured enough to keep things moving, but flexible enough to reflect what matters locally.

Most groups follow a simple format:

  • Introductions and weekly check-in

  • A focused topic or discussion

  • Open conversation and shared learning

Over time, participants build relationships, learn from each other, and gain the confidence to take action in their community.

What You’ll Learn

Topics are practical and grounded in real life. They often include:

  • How local government works

  • How to follow and understand local issues

  • Communicating across perspectives

  • Organizing around community needs

  • Having effective conversations

  • Building relationships that lead to action

Facilitators can adapt topics to fit their community, and participants often shape the direction of future conversations.

Why This Approach Works

This model is built on the idea that people learn best from each other.

Instead of bringing in outside experts, circles create space for neighbors to share their own knowledge, experiences, and perspectives. That builds trust, strengthens relationships, and makes it easier to take action together.

Over time, these groups become a foundation for stronger, more connected communities.

Start a Circle

You don’t need to be an expert to start a group. You just need a place to meet and a willingness to bring people together.

Backroads provides facilitator guides, discussion prompts, and support to help you get started and keep things going.
